Contractor Given 21 Days to Finish Delayed Wakiso Roads

Nile Post reports that the government has issued Jilk Construction Company a 21-day deadline to complete two delayed road works in Makindye-Ssabagabo Division, Wakiso District. The projects are the 1.8-kilometre Municipal Extension Road and the 620-metre Nakayenga Road, both being carried out under the World Bank-funded Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP).

According to the report, the directive was made by State Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs Kabuye Kyofatogabye during an unannounced inspection intended to review progress. The minister said the contractor had been awarded an 18-month contract, but with about one month left before the contract period ends, the works were still behind schedule. He warned that failure to finish within the new three-week window could lead to further government action.

Nile Post says Kyofatogabye instructed the contractor to add workers and equipment to quicken the pace of construction. Residents reportedly welcomed the road works but complained that delays had disrupted movement, transport operations and businesses in the area.

The roads are expected to improve local connectivity in Makindye-Ssabagabo by easing access to homes, commercial areas and social services. More broadly, the GKMA-UDP is aimed at upgrading urban infrastructure across the Greater Kampala metropolitan area, including roads, drainage and mobility systems. Government officials said continued monitoring would be used to push contractors to meet schedules and ensure public funds deliver value.
