Congressman Launches Inquiry Into Taylor Farms CEO's Donation to Trump Amid Cyclospora Outbreak - SFist

SFist reported that Rep. Robert Garcia of California, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, has opened an inquiry into Taylor Farms CEO Bruce Taylor’s political donation and whether the company sought to shape the federal response to a cyclospora outbreak tied to its lettuce. Garcia sent a letter Monday to Taylor questioning a $1 million donation to a Trump-aligned super PAC in 2025, which Garcia said came shortly after the administration delayed a food-safety traceability rule.

According to SFist, the inquiry follows reporting that Taylor Farms executives met privately with FDA officials and the White House on July 16, the same day the FDA publicly pointed to Taylor Farms de Mexico as the main source of contaminated iceberg lettuce supplied to Taco Bell and other customers. Taylor Farms later initiated a voluntary recall across 27 states, and Garcia is seeking information on how the company decided which products to include.

Garcia’s document requests include internal communications about cyclospora or cyclosporiasis from May 1, 2026, onward, as well as communications involving Taylor Farms, Bruce Taylor and the White House from Jan. 1, 2025, onward. The congressman said the matter raises broader questions about public confidence in food-safety oversight after many people became ill.

SFist reported that the White House rejected any suggestion that health and safety were compromised, saying the FDA’s investigation remains evidence-based. Taylor Farms also said food safety is its priority and maintained that FDA testing has not produced a positive cyclospora result in its products.
