Congo-Kinshasa: Health Agencies Fighting Ebola in DR Congo Battle to Win Community Trust

What the report says
International health agencies responding to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo are facing a major challenge beyond the virus itself: persuading local communities to trust the response effort. According to AllAfrica’s report from Geneva, the outbreak was first detected in Mongbwalu health zone in Ituri Province and has since spread across 53 health zones in Ituri, North Kivu, Haut-Uele and Tshopo provinces.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said the outbreak, declared three months earlier, was still expanding with rising cases and deaths. The group said community acceptance is essential for measures such as safe burials and other containment steps. The report also said the International Council of Nurses has urged Congo’s health minister to act quickly to pay and protect nurses and other frontline workers.
The council said some health workers have reportedly gone unpaid for two to three months while facing serious risks. Its leadership argued that regular pay and stronger protection are needed if the response is to succeed. The World Health Organization’s director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, also said in Geneva that the outbreak is the second-largest Ebola epidemic on record and is spreading faster than previous outbreaks.
AllAfrica cited WHO figures of 4,449 confirmed cases and 2,061 deaths across five provinces and 53 health zones. The report said many deaths are occurring in communities rather than treatment centers, which health officials see as a sign that transmission chains remain difficult to track and break.
