Congo-Kinshasa: Ebola - DRC Gets 70,000 Ervebo Vaccine Doses As Bundibugyo Outbreak Worsens

What the report says
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has received an initial shipment of 70,000 doses of the Ervebo Ebola vaccine to help respond to the worsening Bundibugyo virus outbreak, according to a joint statement from the World Health Organization and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. The report said the vaccine allocation followed a request from the DRC government to the global Ebola vaccine stockpile managed by the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision.
Of the doses received, 20,000 are slated for a Phase III clinical trial to test whether Ervebo can protect against Bundibugyo virus, while 50,000 are intended for frontline personnel and health workers. WHO said the vaccine is licensed for Ebola caused by the Zaire species, but its effectiveness against Bundibugyo remains uncertain, though early laboratory and animal findings have suggested possible cross-protection. The organizations said people receiving the vaccine must be informed about its limits and give consent.
The article said the outbreak, declared on 15 May, had spread from Mongbwalu in Ituri province to 54 health zones across six provinces. As of 12 August, WHO had reported 4,665 confirmed cases and 2,184 deaths. Health officials and researchers are under pressure to use existing tools while developing more targeted measures, including a separate experimental Bundibugyo vaccine now in early human testing.
WHO and Africa CDC also emphasized community involvement in the response, saying local participation is important for protecting affected populations, limiting transmission and supporting public confidence. The report added that neighboring countries, including Nigeria, have increased preparedness because of the risk of cross-border spread.
