Congo: Ebola deaths increase to 1,000

DW reported that the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached nearly 1,000 recorded deaths, citing Congo Health Ministry data reviewed in a World Health Organization overview. The figures, covering cases traced from May 15 to July 19, show 2,473 infections in Congo and neighboring Uganda linked to the latest Bundibugyo strain, with 999 deaths documented in Congo and two in Uganda. Separately, Africa CDC Director-General Dr. Jean Kaseya told a health summit in Ghana that 1,031 deaths had been confirmed.

The outbreak is raising alarm because officials say it is spreading faster than they can fully track. According to DW, Congolese health officials are tracing about 82% of contacts connected to confirmed cases, below the 90% to 95% level the WHO says is needed to control transmission. Officials also say more than 80% of new infections are arising from unknown transmission chains, a sign that the virus is circulating beyond identified clusters.

DW reported that there are currently no vaccines or treatments for this new strain, complicating response efforts. The virus has been recorded in five of Congo’s 26 provinces, with Ituri province, on the borders with Uganda and South Sudan, identified as the outbreak’s epicenter. Ebola spreads through bodily fluids and can be deadly, making rapid isolation, contact tracing and safe care central to containment.

Response efforts are also being affected by insecurity and poor working conditions for health staff. DW said attacks on health workers, fear for personal safety and unpaid wages have pushed some personnel to leave affected areas. Kaseya called for stronger international support, warning that failure to stop the outbreak could make it one of the worst documented Ebola emergencies.
