BBC News reported that the 2026 Commonwealth Games formally opened in Glasgow with a ceremony at the Hydro Arena featuring King Charles III, Queen Camilla, the Loch Ness Monster and athletes and Para-athletes from 74 nations and territories. The King and Queen were welcomed by cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy after arriving in a Doctor Who-style Tardis, a nod to Glasgow’s blue police boxes. The event marked the first Commonwealth Games with Charles as Head of the Commonwealth.

According to the BBC, delegations entered the arena before a capacity crowd of about 10,000, with Botswana appearing first and Scotland last to the loudest reception. The ceremony included Scottish cultural references and music, including bagpipes, “Flower of Scotland,” performances by Nathan Evans, Callum Beattie, KT Tunstall and Nina Nesbitt, and a staged tribute described as a “love letter to Glasgow and the Commonwealth.” New Prime Minister Andy Burnham also attended, in what the BBC described as his first major engagement since replacing Sir Keir Starmer.

The Games are being held after uncertainty over whether the event would go ahead, following the Australian state of Victoria’s withdrawal as host in 2023. Glasgow stepped in at short notice, reusing venues from its 2014 Games and staging a smaller programme with eight fewer sports than that edition. Commonwealth Sport president Donald Rukare credited the legacy of 2014 and Glasgow’s welcome for making the event possible.

The King used his remarks to thank Glasgow and underline the importance of tackling plastic pollution in oceans and waterways. BBC News reported that competition will run for 10 days, with the closing ceremony scheduled for Sunday, 2 August, and the first medals due in Para-powerlifting on Friday evening.
