Claimed Israeli capture of Lebanese ridge reshapes negotiation dynamics

What the report says
Israel said on Friday that it had established operational control over the Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, an area described by analysts as strategically important because it overlooks parts of Nabatieh, Marjayoun and nearby border regions. According to Al Jazeera, the Israeli operation has involved weeks of drone and air strikes and has centered on claims that Hezbollah used tunnels and underground facilities there. Fighting was reported to be continuing despite Israel’s assertion of control.
The development comes against the backdrop of months of fragile diplomacy between Israel and Lebanon, including US-mediated direct talks that began in April and a framework agreement announced in late June aimed at reducing hostilities. Al Jazeera reported that the deal has not halted Israeli attacks, and that Beirut continues negotiations while saying it has few other options. Hezbollah remains opposed to direct talks with Israeli officials and has preferred indirect arrangements.
Analysts quoted by Al Jazeera said any Israeli hold on the ridge could improve Israel’s bargaining position in the planned talks later this month, especially if it is seen as occupying more Lebanese territory. Others noted that the high ground’s military value cuts both ways and that retaining it could expose Israeli forces to further attacks. The reported capture also matters because it fits into a wider pattern of cross-border escalation since 2023, which has already caused heavy damage and large-scale casualties in Lebanon.
