WABC-TV reports that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has outlined pricing details for his administration’s planned city-owned grocery stores, saying they will offer a 30% discount on a defined group of staple foods while charging market prices for other goods. The announcement was made in Brooklyn as the city works to identify three more sites for the program, with one planned in each borough.

According to WABC, the discounted “core” basket would include items such as produce, pasta, meat, seafood, bread, yogurt, rice and beans. The mayor said prices for those essentials would be set monthly at 30% below typical retail levels, which the administration estimates could save shoppers about $90 per month, or around $1,000 a year. The city has issued a 44-page request for proposals to find operators for the stores.

The plan calls for five neighborhood grocery stores. WABC reports that La Marqueta in East Harlem and a site in Hunts Point in the Bronx have been named so far, with all five expected to open by 2029. Under the model described by the station, the city would own or lease the space and pay for construction or renovation, while a private contractor would run day-to-day operations. The capital budget includes $70 million for the program.

The proposal has drawn concern from critics who say city-backed stores could hurt bodegas and other small retailers. Mamdani said the stores would avoid selling products such as cigarettes, alcohol, lottery tickets and hot food, areas he described as important revenue sources for local shops. The first store is expected in the Bronx next year, with East Harlem planned later.
