Citi Says Magnificent Seven Tag Is Obsolete in AI Stock Winners - Yahoo Finance

What the report says
Yahoo Finance, carrying a Bloomberg report, said Citigroup strategists argue that the “Magnificent Seven” label is no longer useful for investors trying to assess winners from the U.S. artificial intelligence trade. In a note cited by Bloomberg, a team led by Scott Chronert said investors should look beyond the seven mega-cap stocks and instead focus on a wider “growth cluster” that includes major technology companies and many businesses connected to AI infrastructure spending.
According to the report, Citi said this broader group now accounts for more than half of the S&P 500’s market value and nearly 48% of its earnings. Chronert’s team said the cluster better captures the companies driving both profits and stock performance in the index than a simple comparison between the Magnificent Seven and the rest of the market.
The shift matters because the seven-stock grouping — Amazon, Nvidia, Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Tesla and Alphabet — has become less cohesive in 2026, Bloomberg reported. The Magnificent Seven index has lagged as investors rotate toward other areas expected to benefit from heavy AI investment. The article noted divergent performance within the group, including pressure on Microsoft and Meta tied to concerns about returns on large capital spending, while Apple has risen as investors welcomed its decision not to join the data-center spending race.
Bloomberg also reported that semiconductor-linked stocks led gains earlier in 2026 before weakening recently on valuation concerns. Citi’s Chronert said valuations for the broader growth cluster remain historically attractive and supported by earnings expectations through 2027, while other strategists have warned it may still be too soon to buy major AI spenders.
