Citadel Securities Sees Warsh Delivering Surprise Fed Rate Hike - Yahoo Finance

What the report says
Yahoo Finance, carrying a Bloomberg report, said Citadel Securities expects the Federal Reserve to lift interest rates at its policy meeting this week, a move that would surprise many investors and mark a more forceful anti-inflation stance under Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh. The report, published Monday, said Citadel Securities macro strategy head Frank Flight argued that a quarter-point increase on Wednesday would bolster Warsh’s commitment to price stability and signal that the central bank is less bound by the practice of telegraphing policy decisions far in advance.
According to the report, interest-rate swaps were assigning roughly a 40% probability to a quarter-point hike at the upcoming decision, while traders were fully pricing in an increase by September. Flight said acting now would likely matter more than delaying until September because it could reset expectations for how the Fed responds when inflation pressures rise.
Bloomberg reported that Flight sees a surprise hike as potentially influencing company pricing plans and wage negotiations before inflation becomes more deeply embedded, which could reduce the need for more tightening later. He argued that recent softer employment and inflation readings should not overshadow broader signs that inflation risks remain high and the labor market is still steady.
The report also pointed to energy and geopolitical risks as part of the backdrop. Oil prices fell Monday after the U.S. paused daily strikes against Iran, but Bloomberg said prices remained sharply higher for the month amid threats to Saudi exports from the Red Sea by Iran-backed Houthis. Citadel Securities’ view matters because a near-term Fed hike would challenge market expectations and could affect borrowing costs, asset prices and inflation psychology.
