Cindy Sanyu says film industry can learn from music

What the report says
Musician Cindy Sanyu has said Uganda’s film industry could speed up its growth by taking cues from the music business, especially in how artists brand themselves and market their names. In comments reported by Sqoop Uganda, she argued that musicians have become more effective at building personal brands that draw audiences, sponsorships and wider investment.
Cindy, who has also appeared in local drama productions, said filmmakers and actors could benefit from presenting themselves more strategically and creating opportunities that go beyond a single project. She framed this as a lesson in packaging talent and developing a loyal audience, rather than simply relying on individual films or performances.
The singer was also asked about the possibility of musicians in acting forming an association to push such ideas. She said she already has duties with the Uganda Musicians Association and did not want to take on more responsibilities. Instead, she suggested that people with stronger industry knowledge should lead the effort within the film sector.
Cindy also urged musicians entering film not to assume they already understand the industry, noting that experienced film professionals are better placed to guide its development. Her remarks point to a broader conversation in Uganda’s creative sector about collaboration, branding and how different entertainment industries can learn from one another.
