Church of Uganda, Govt Sign 12-Year Partnership to Boost Climate Resilience and Sustainable Aquaculture

Nile Post reported that the Church of Uganda and Uganda’s Ministry of Water and Environment have signed a 12-year memorandum of understanding intended to support wetland restoration, climate adaptation and community livelihoods through sustainable aquaculture. The agreement was signed on Thursday at the ministry’s headquarters in Luzira, Kampala, by Permanent Secretary Dr. Alfred Okot Okidi for the government and Rev. Canon William Ongeng, the Church of Uganda’s Provincial Secretary, for the church’s registered trustees.

According to the report, the partnership falls under the government project Building Resilient Communities, Wetland Ecosystems and Associated Catchments in Uganda. Under the arrangement, the ministry will install and make operational fish feed pelleting machines at selected Church of Uganda facilities in 24 project districts. The church is expected to provide suitable sites for the equipment and collaborate with government teams on project management and implementation.

The initiative is also expected to assist cooperative groups with technical training, start-up capital, market connections and operational support, with the aim of making fish feed production enterprises sustainable. Nile Post said officials from the ministry and representatives of the Church of Uganda’s Directorate of Household and Community Transformation, led by Rev. Andrew Agaba, witnessed the signing.

The development matters because it links environmental protection with income-generating activities in communities where the church has an established presence. The publisher reported that Dr. Okidi framed the partnership as a way to bring climate-smart livelihood interventions closer to local people, while Rev. Canon Ongeng presented it as part of the church’s broader social and economic mission alongside its spiritual work.
