Chris Obore, six others get bail after two months in custody

The Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala has granted bail to former Parliament Director of Communications and Public Affairs Chris Obore and six co-accused in a case linked to the alleged misappropriation of Shs27.2 billion at Parliament. The ruling was issued by Justice Michael Elubu after hearing arguments from the defence and the Inspectorate of Government, which had asked that the accused remain in custody while investigations continued.

According to The Independent Uganda, the seven are facing charges including embezzlement, causing financial loss and money laundering over funds said to have been allocated for Parliament donations and corporate social responsibility activities. The accused have denied the allegations. They have been in custody since July 2, 2026, and the court considered their bail applications filed in July.

The court set cash bail amounts ranging from Shs20 million to Shs35 million, depending on the accused, and ordered them to deposit passports and report regularly to the court. Sureties were also required to provide property documents as security. The judge warned that any failure to appear could lead to forfeiture of the pledged property.

The case is significant because it involves senior former and current parliamentary staff and allegations of large-scale financial loss at a key public institution. The prosecution argued that some accused could interfere with witnesses, while the defence said they had fixed residences and strong sureties.
