CHRIS OBORE: Court to rule on bail on September 9

The Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala has set September 9, 2026, to decide bail applications from former Parliament Director of Communications and Public Affairs Chris Obore and six co-accused. The group faces charges including embezzlement, causing financial loss and money laundering in a case tied to allegations of misusing billions of shillings at Parliament. Justice Michael Elubu heard six of the seven applications on Monday and ordered written submissions to be filed in stages before the ruling.

According to The Independent Uganda, the remaining application, for Emmanuel Okwi, will be heard on August 6 after the court said his filing lacked some required documents. The defence presented arguments around fixed residences, medical conditions, passports, land titles and proposed sureties for several applicants. Obore’s lawyer said he has homes in Mukono and Bukedea, while the defence for other accused persons made similar claims about residence and willingness to comply with bail terms.

The Inspectorate of Government opposed the requests, saying investigations are still under way and that some accused could interfere with witnesses, many of whom work at Parliament. Prosecutors also questioned some of the property and surety documents submitted to support bail. The court did not rule on the merits of the applications immediately, and all the accused will remain on remand until the September 9 decision. More broadly, the case reflects a wider corruption prosecution involving alleged losses from Parliament-related funds, though the court has yet to determine bail or the underlying charges.
