Chinese AI Sensation Moonshot’s Gamble on Big Models Pays Off - Yahoo Finance

What the report says
Bloomberg, in a report carried by Yahoo Finance, said Chinese AI startup Moonshot drew heavy attention at the World AI Conference after releasing Kimi K3, a 2.8 trillion-parameter model, on Friday. The company’s booth reportedly became a major draw despite larger displays from Alibaba and Tencent, reflecting renewed interest in Moonshot as a potential challenger to leading U.S. AI firms and to domestic rival DeepSeek.
The report said Kimi K3 ranked behind only Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 in overall capability, according to Artificial Analysis. Bloomberg also reported that Elon Musk praised the model and that OpenAI strategy chief Dean Ball warned its open-weight release had broader implications for the industry. Moonshot is said to be closing a funding round valuing it above $30 billion, with a Hong Kong listing possible within six months.
Moonshot was founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin, a 33-year-old technologist with experience at Carnegie Mellon University, Meta and Google. Bloomberg described the company’s rise, setback after DeepSeek’s 2025 breakout, and shift toward open-source strategy, enterprise users and developer tools. People familiar with the company told Bloomberg that Moonshot’s recurring revenue rose sharply in 2026, reaching $300 million in June.
The development matters because it suggests Chinese AI companies may be advancing faster than many observers expected, particularly through open-weight models that can be adopted by developers and businesses. Bloomberg framed Moonshot’s Kimi K3 launch as both a comeback for Yang and another sign that China’s AI sector remains a serious force in the global race.
