China tightens travel restrictions for citizens

Chinese authorities say the regulations are meant to protect sovereignty and security and do not target ordinary citizens. A government-linked “rumour-refuting” platform said the rules are aimed at higher-risk travel situations, including deception abroad and illegal gambling or scam activity. Critics, however, argue the changes give officials another way to pressure citizens over their conduct overseas and to limit criticism of the state.

Some citizens say they have faced unexplained passport denials or travel barriers, while others in sensitive jobs, including civil servants and state-owned enterprise workers, already encounter limits on overseas travel. Legal and rights experts quoted by the BBC said the trend reflects a broader tightening under President Xi Jinping. The report places the new measures in the context of rising use of exit bans in recent years, though it notes the true scale may be higher than official records show.
