The Independent Uganda reported in a July 27 news analysis that China’s influence at the 2026 FIFA World Cup was substantial despite its national team not qualifying for the expanded 48-team tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The article noted the contrast between China’s limited football record — its only World Cup appearance was in 2002 — and the prominent role of Chinese companies in the event’s technology, commercial and supply networks.

According to the report, Lenovo, FIFA’s official technology partner, provided AI-enabled devices, servers and digital systems for tournament operations, deploying more than 17,000 devices and 350 engineers across 16 host stadiums. Hisense, named the official VAR Review TV Provider, supplied MiniLED displays for video assistant refereeing operations at the International Broadcast Centre in Dallas. The article also described China’s manufacturing hubs, including Yiwu in Zhejiang province, as key suppliers of fan merchandise, electronics and event-related goods.

The Independent framed this as part of a wider shift from China’s older role as a low-profile manufacturer for global sport toward a more visible presence in sponsorship, infrastructure and branding. It cited Lenovo, Hisense and Mengniu among major Chinese sponsors, saying their investments were worth about $350 million. The report also linked the World Cup presence to Beijing’s long-running ambition to build football strength, including reforms announced in 2015 and President Xi Jinping’s stated goal of making China a major sports power.

The article added that China Media Group secured domestic broadcast rights, reportedly after FIFA reduced its asking price from about $300 million to around $60 million. For FIFA, the analysis said, China remains important as a vast media market even when its team is absent from the pitch.
