China is preparing to launch Chang’e-7, an unmanned robotic moon mission that Al Jazeera reports could lift off as early as Monday within a launch window running from August 24 to August 31. The mission is aimed at investigating ice water in permanently shadowed craters near the moon’s south pole, especially around Shackleton Crater, a region that has not been reached this closely by earlier lunar landings.

According to the report, Chang’e-7 is China’s seventh moon mission and its most ambitious so far. The spacecraft includes an orbiter, lander, rover and a solar-powered hopper. The orbiter will stay in lunar orbit to map and relay data, while the lander is expected to touch down near the south pole with scientific instruments. The rover will study the landing site, and the hopper is designed to make short flights into hard-to-reach shadowed craters.

Al Jazeera notes that multiple missions over the past two decades have provided evidence that water exists on the moon, including NASA work in shadowed craters and India’s Chandrayaan-3 in 2023, which found additional evidence near the south pole. The new mission matters because lunar water could help scientists understand the moon’s history and the origins of water in the Earth-moon system.

More practically, if the ice is accessible in useful quantities, it could support future crewed missions by providing drinking water, oxygen and hydrogen fuel. The report also points out that international space law bars countries from claiming the moon as territory, while leaving resource use questions less clear.
