The issue has come into focus as the country deals with the aftermath of Typhoon Noul, which the BBC said made landfall over the weekend. Recent fake posts have shown purported flood deaths, exaggerated scenes in places not hit by flooding, false emergency response claims and misleading power outage reports that led some residents to buy supplies in panic.

The BBC cited examples including flooding in Hengzhou, Guangxi, where snakes escaped from a breeding farm in early July; fake images then circulated claiming crocodiles had been released into a river. Chinese police and state media have warned that sensational disaster content can attract views and followers, while experts told the BBC that AI tools have made realistic false images, video, audio and text far easier to create.

Authorities have responded with arrests, fines and criminal investigations in some cases. On 23 July, China’s Cyberspace Administration announced a nationwide campaign against fake online disaster content, targeting fabricated data, malicious edits, staged scenes, misattributed past events and accounts impersonating officials. Officials also urged platforms to strengthen checks and encouraged the public to rely on verified announcements.

The BBC noted that China is heavily investing in AI while also trying to control its misuse. Experts said watermarking, location checks and public education may help, but detection tools lag behind generation tools. The report also highlighted a trust problem: past instances of official downplaying or underreporting disasters have made it easier for false content to spread during emergencies.
