The Verge reported that two major Chinese AI developers, Moonshot AI and Alibaba, have announced new frontier models they say can compete with leading systems from OpenAI and Anthropic. Moonshot, based in Beijing, introduced Kimi K3 on Friday, while Alibaba followed over the weekend with a preview of Qwen3.8. Both companies are presenting the releases as high-performing alternatives to top U.S. models, with Moonshot saying its internal tests place Kimi K3 behind only OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol and Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 overall, while Alibaba described Qwen3.8 as among the strongest models available.

A central distinction highlighted by The Verge is the Chinese companies’ emphasis on public availability. Moonshot calls Kimi K3 the largest open-source AI system, citing 2.8 trillion parameters, while Alibaba says Qwen3.8 has 2.4 trillion parameters and is still developing. Parameter counts can indicate scale, though they do not by themselves prove capability. Moonshot says it plans to release full model weights on July 27, and Alibaba says Qwen3.8 will become open-weight soon.

The Verge cautioned that the companies’ performance claims cannot be fully evaluated until the models are released and independently tested. Still, the announcements add pressure to U.S. AI labs and policymakers, especially after DeepSeek previously drew attention with a lower-cost model that appeared competitive with leading American systems.

The developments matter because advanced AI is increasingly tied to economic competition, national security and geopolitical influence. They also come as Washington has used export controls to limit China’s access to advanced chips, while many top U.S. models remain proprietary.
