The incident occurred on Monday, according to the report published July 21, 2026, near the BRP Sierra Madre, a grounded Philippine warship that Manila maintains as a military outpost.

The Philippine military said a Chinese coastguard vessel approached the outpost and harassed personnel, with one sailor suffering head injuries from a wooden baton. China’s coastguard disputed that account, saying two Philippine boats ignored warnings and were responsible for the clash by ramming one of its patrol vessels first.

The shoal is a longstanding flashpoint. Beijing claims nearly the entire South China Sea and has called for the removal of the Philippine outpost, while Al Jazeera noted that Second Thomas Shoal lies inside the Philippines’ 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
