Chil Group launches digital ward rounds in rural health facilities

Chil Group has introduced a new digital health platform aimed at improving inpatient care in rural health facilities in Uganda, according to a media release cited by The Independent on Sept. 3, 2026. The E-Ward Round Platform is designed to link doctors and nurses in rural clinics with specialists based in urban medical centres so they can conduct virtual ward rounds and review patients without requiring long travel for referrals.

The company said the system will be available across nearly 400 partner health facilities, many of which have inpatient wards but limited access to specialist staff such as cardiologists, neurologists and intensivists. Chil Group said the platform combines virtual consultations, connected medical devices, electronic records and an AI-supported triage tool that can help clinicians monitor vital signs and prioritize urgent cases.

Founder and CEO Dr. Shamim Nabuuma Kaliisa said the launch builds on the company’s earlier telemedicine services, which had focused mainly on outpatient care over the past six years. She said the new module extends that model into inpatient management and is intended to make specialised care more accessible across Africa. The company also said it has incorporated privacy and security features into the platform’s design.

More broadly, the launch reflects a wider push by health providers to use digital tools to narrow the gap between urban specialist services and rural health facilities.
