Chiefs release first renderings of $3B domed stadium in Kansas City, Kansas - KSHB 41 Kansas City

What the report says
KSHB reports that the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday unveiled the first renderings for a proposed $3 billion domed stadium in Kansas City, Kansas. The team presented the images as an early look at a new home planned across the state line from its longtime Arrowhead Stadium site in Missouri. Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in the team’s announcement that the project is intended to improve the game-day experience for fans.
According to KSHB, the stadium is expected to seat about 70,000 people and include more than 20,000 parking spaces. The roof is planned with translucent ETFE panels, a material used in other major stadium projects in cities including Minneapolis, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The team says the design has been evaluated by audio engineers to enhance crowd noise, while the bowl shape is meant to echo elements of Arrowhead. Planned features include a Drum Deck, a Chiefs Ring of Honor, a larger Hall of Honor and team store, a modern plaza with a statue of Lamar Hunt, and a surrounding mixed-use development.
KSHB says Kansas City, Kansas-based MANICA will be the lead design architect, with HNTB serving as architect of record. Chiefs President Mark Donovan said the firms were chosen after a months-long process and that the project is expected to take shape over the next five years.
The stadium plan follows a December agreement with Kansas officials to move the franchise to a site near North 126th Street and State Avenue. KSHB also reports the Chiefs plan a $300 million headquarters and practice facility in Olathe, with funding for the projects coming through a public-private partnership involving Kansas sales tax and revenue bonds and the state’s professional sports attraction fund.
