Chicago Teams Targeting Reid Detmers - MLB Trade Rumors

What the report says
MLB Trade Rumors, citing Russell Dorsey of Yahoo! Sports, reported July 27 that both the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox have shown interest in Los Angeles Angels left-hander Reid Detmers ahead of the trade deadline. The report says Angels interim general manager John Mozeliak has been fielding interest in Detmers, who is viewed as one of the more notable controllable starting pitchers potentially available.
Detmers, a former top-10 draft pick, returned to the Angels’ rotation this season after spending time in the bullpen in 2025. MLB Trade Rumors noted that he has a 4.05 ERA over 21 appearances, with a 28% strikeout rate and a career-best 7.5% walk rate. He is under arbitration control through 2028 and is making $2.625 million this season, factors that could make the acquisition cost high if Los Angeles decides to move him.
The Cubs’ fit is tied to a rotation thinned by injuries and recent roster movement. MLB Trade Rumors pointed to absences involving Cade Horton, Justin Steele, Edward Cabrera and Ben Brown, along with the club’s decision to move on from Jameson Taillon. Detmers would give Chicago another established option alongside arms such as Matthew Boyd and Shota Imanaga.
The White Sox, meanwhile, are described as ahead of schedule in their rebuild while holding a lead in the AL Central. The report says Chicago could prefer a pitcher with multiple years of control rather than paying heavily for a short-term rental. For the Angels, moving Detmers or other controllable players such as José Soriano or Zach Neto could be a way to add significant young talent to a weak farm system if they choose a broader reset.
