Chelsea sign Palace defender Lacroix for £52m

BBC Sport reports that Chelsea have completed the signing of France defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace in a £52m deal. The 26-year-old centre-back has agreed a contract at Stamford Bridge running until 2032, becoming Chelsea’s third signing of the summer window after Morgan Rogers and Marco Palestra.

Lacroix joined Palace from Wolfsburg in 2024 for an initial £15.5m and became an important player under Oliver Glasner. According to the BBC, he made 55 appearances in all competitions as Palace won the Uefa Conference League, described as the club’s first major European trophy. He has seven France caps and featured three times at the 2026 World Cup, including in the third-place play-off against England, as France finished fourth.

The BBC’s analysis says Chelsea had identified the 6ft 4in defender as a preferred centre-back target after concerns over the team’s defensive performance, physicality and leadership. John Stones and Jacobo Ramon were also considered, but negotiations with Palace and over personal terms prolonged the move before Lacroix approved it after France’s World Cup campaign ended.

The signing is framed as part of a shift in Chelsea’s recruitment under the club’s current ownership and new head coach Xabi Alonso. BBC Sport notes Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League and without a trophy last season, and says co-owner Behdad Eghbali had indicated the club would adjust its model by adding more experience around a young core including Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill.
