Chelsea nearing deal for Rayo defender Chavarria

What the report says
Chelsea are moving toward a deal with Rayo Vallecano for left-back Pep Chavarria, according to BBC Sport Football. The 28-year-old has already agreed personal terms with the Premier League club, and the reported transfer package is worth about £16.3m plus add-ons. The article says Chelsea are increasingly confident the transfer can be completed after a prolonged negotiation.
BBC Sport reports that the sides have been in talks since late June, when Chelsea’s initial £15m bid was rejected. The discussion reportedly became drawn out because Chelsea believed Rayo were pushing up their valuation, at one point seeking as much as Chavarria’s £42.8m release clause. Chavarria, who has been at Rayo for four years after joining from Real Zaragoza in 2022, is said to have made clear that he wanted the move to Stamford Bridge.
The transfer is significant for Chelsea’s squad planning under new manager Xabi Alonso, who is described as viewing Chavarria as a key target after facing him when Alonso was at Real Madrid. A move would add depth at left-back and support Alonso’s preference for wing-backs, a system he used successfully at Bayer Leverkusen. More broadly, the report places the deal alongside Chelsea’s wider summer rebuild, including several high-profile arrivals and expected player sales.
