Chelsea in talks to sign Atalanta defender Ahanor

What the report says
Chelsea are in talks to sign Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor, according to BBC Sport Football. The 18-year-old Italy youth international is reported to have a price tag of 40m euros, or about £34.3m, which Atalanta would accept if matched. The club had previously turned down Brighton’s offer of 34m euros for the player earlier this summer, the BBC report said.
Ahanor, who mainly operates at left-back, joined Atalanta from Genoa last year on a three-year deal. BBC Sport says he made 28 Serie A appearances last season and became a regular starter, while also making his Champions League debut in Atalanta’s win over Club Brugge in September. He was called up by Italy in May for friendlies against Luxembourg and Greece.
The reported move fits Chelsea’s wider squad rebuilding under manager Xabi Alonso, who took charge at Stamford Bridge in July. The club has already added several players this summer, including Morgan Rogers, Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, and previously signed Marco Palestra from Atalanta. Chelsea are due to face Brighton in the Premier League next, after opening the season with a 3-2 win over Fulham. The talks matter because they suggest Chelsea are still targeting young defensive reinforcements while Atalanta continue to attract interest in emerging talent.
