Chelsea agree record £117m deal for Villa midfielder Rogers

What the report says
Nile Post, carrying a BBC Sport report, says Chelsea have reached a £117 million agreement to sign Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers. The 23-year-old is expected to move to Stamford Bridge on a six-year contract, with the club holding an option to extend it by another year. The report says Rogers is due to undergo a medical on Monday after returning from England duty at the 2026 World Cup.
If completed on the reported terms, the transfer would be Chelsea’s biggest-ever signing, exceeding the £107 million paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023. The fee would also surpass the reported £116 million deal Manchester City agreed with Nottingham Forest for England midfielder Elliot Anderson earlier in the summer, making Rogers the most expensive English player under that benchmark.
Rogers has been an important player for Aston Villa over the past two and a half seasons under Unai Emery. He joined Villa from Middlesbrough on 1 February 2024, after previously being part of Manchester City’s setup. The report credits him with 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Villa and says he was part of the squad that won the Europa League last season.
The move is presented as part of new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso’s effort to reshape the squad before the Premier League campaign. Rogers’ England profile has also grown, with the report stating he has 21 senior caps, one international goal, and six appearances at this summer’s World Cup.
