Charles Rwomushana arrested during live radio show

Ugandan political analyst Charles Rwomushana was taken away by Uganda People’s Defence Forces soldiers during a live radio discussion on Radio Simba 97.3 FM in Kampala, according to The Independent Uganda citing URN. The incident happened on Saturday morning on the station’s weekly political program, where Rwomushana is a regular panelist, and the arrest reportedly took place about half an hour after the show began.

The station’s security guard, Catherine Nsibiha, told the outlet that several people arrived in two Toyota Noah vehicles and later a group of uniformed and plain-clothed soldiers forced their way into the building. She said the officers moved to the studio area and removed Rwomushana, while receptionist Christine Namubiru said staff were ordered to stay in place as the officers entered the premises. The report said the soldiers did not sign the visitors’ book or identify themselves.

By the time of publication, the UPDF had not publicly commented, and the military spokesperson did not respond to calls for comment, according to the report. The article noted that this was not the first time Rwomushana has been arrested, referring to a 2020 police arrest after a television appearance. It also said he has been named in separate treason-related allegations involving supporters of opposition figure Kizza Besigye, though no charges were disclosed in connection with the latest detention.
