Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby on Friday pardoned his jailed main rival, former prime minister and opposition leader Succès Masra, along with eight other opposition figures, according to France 24. The move comes after Masra had been sentenced to 20 years in prison in a case involving accusations of hate speech, xenophobia and incitement linked to deadly violence in southwestern Chad. Human Rights Watch had described the trial as politically motivated, the publisher reported.

France 24 said the other eight pardoned politicians belonged to the Political Actors' Consultation Group, or GCAP, the country’s main opposition coalition. They had been arrested after helping organize a protest banned by authorities and later received eight-year sentences for inciting an insurrection. The presidential decree published on the presidency’s Facebook page said the measure grants remission of custodial sentences, while leaving convictions in place.

The pardon drew mixed reactions from political actors. Opposition voices quoted by France 24 criticized the government for weakening democratic rights, while Déby’s ruling party welcomed the release as a step that would allow the politicians to return home. The development comes against a backdrop of heightened concern over political freedoms in Chad, where Déby has ruled since taking over during the military transition after his father’s death in 2021. Masra had returned from exile, briefly served as prime minister, and later faced Déby in the 2024 presidential election.
