MLB Trade Rumors reported that San Francisco Giants utility player Casey Schmitt is likely finished for the 2026 season after suffering a torn meniscus in his left knee. The Giants placed Schmitt on the 10-day injured list after he was hurt during a win over Milwaukee, when his knee gave way as he stopped and turned back toward first base. On July 29, manager Tony Vitello told reporters, including MLB.com’s Maria I. Guardado, that Schmitt would undergo surgery and was probably out for the year.

The injury interrupts what MLB Trade Rumors described as a breakout season for the fourth-year player. Schmitt has hit .271/.301/.483 with 21 home runs in 409 plate appearances, providing San Francisco with a right-handed bat and defensive flexibility around the infield and outfield. The report noted that his offensive profile remains aggressive, but added that increased hard contact and more fly balls helped him unlock additional power this season.

San Francisco selected infielder Osleivis Basabe to replace Schmitt on the active roster, using one of its open 40-man spots. Basabe, 25, last appeared in the majors with Tampa Bay in 2023 and has spent the past two seasons with Triple-A Sacramento, where he has hit .268/.344/.388 with five homers and 12 steals in 75 games.

The injury also affects the Giants’ roster and trade-deadline outlook. MLB Trade Rumors wrote that Schmitt’s injury likely removes any chance he would be moved, though the club was already more likely to keep him because he remains under arbitration control through 2029. His absence could create more opportunities for Christian Koss, especially with Matt Chapman currently on the injured list and Luis Arraez expected to be traded.
