BBC Sport reported that Major League Soccer has opened a review into a tampering allegation involving Inter Miami following the club’s announcement that it had signed Brazilian midfielder Casemiro. Miami said on Wednesday that the 34-year-old, who recently left Manchester United, had agreed a contract through the end of the 2027 MLS season, with an option running to June 2029.

According to the BBC, the issue relates to MLS “discovery rights,” a league mechanism that can give one club priority to pursue a player. LA Galaxy held those rights for Casemiro, while Inter Miami said it had obtained them from the Galaxy. MLS said it was collecting information and would not comment further until the review is completed. Both clubs have said the terms of their settlement over the discovery priority will be disclosed after the investigation concludes.

Casemiro arrives in MLS after a decorated European career, including five Champions League titles with Real Madrid and domestic cup wins at Manchester United. BBC Sport reported that he made 160 appearances for United, scoring 26 goals and adding 14 assists. He also played for Brazil at this summer’s World Cup, where the team reached the last 16.

The case matters because MLS roster and acquisition rules are central to competitive balance in the league. BBC Sport noted that Inter Miami has previously faced scrutiny over transfer compliance: in 2021, the club was fined $2m for rule breaches linked to the signing of Blaise Matuidi.
