What the report says

Former England striker Andy Carroll has publicly thanked people for their support after speaking about being sexually assaulted at his home in 2021. In comments reported by BBC Sport Football, the 36-year-old said the reaction since he described the incident has been overwhelming and has helped him cope with what he called a traumatic experience.

The article says the assault happened during Carroll’s second spell at Newcastle United, while his former partner was away. Carroll identified the man involved as television dance coach Kevin Adams in a separate interview with the Sun. Adams was later jailed for 20 months in 2023 after being convicted of sexual offences. BBC Sport noted that Adams has not commented publicly since being named by Carroll.

Carroll, who has also played for Liverpool and West Ham and is now a player and co-owner of National League South club Dagenham, discussed the episode in his autobiography Owning It and in an interview on the Football Uncensored podcast. He said giving evidence in court was difficult and that the experience affected him for a long time.

More broadly, the case highlights the lasting impact sexual violence can have on victims and the role public disclosure can play in seeking support. BBC Sport also included signposting to help services for people affected by sexual abuse or violence.
