Carrefour upgrades Namuwongo children’s home

What the report says
Carrefour Uganda has renovated and handed over a community facility used by In Need Home, an NGO that supports vulnerable children and families in Namuwongo, Kampala, according to a media release cited by The Independent Uganda. The work, completed through the retailer’s shopper-funded “Round Up Your Bill” initiative, covered classrooms, offices and sanitation facilities, along with repairs to roofs, windows, ceilings, doors and water gutters. The project also included re-plastering and repainting to make the premises safer and more comfortable for children and staff.
In Need Home executive director Michael Tumwesigye said the upgrades would improve care for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, including orphans and some children living with HIV. He said the renovation strengthened sanitation and safety, pointing in particular to the replacement of bamboo staircases with terrazzo-finished stairs and the installation of modern flushing toilets. The organisation currently houses 45 children on site and supports 165 children in total, including those attending schools elsewhere.
Carrefour said the initiative has raised more than Shs630 million so far and financed six community projects nationwide. The company linked the handover to the broader sustainability goals of Majid Al Futtaim, which operates Carrefour in Uganda, with priorities that include education, healthcare, community development and economic empowerment. The upgrade reflects how retail customer donations are being directed toward local social infrastructure, especially for child welfare services.
