Rolling Stone reported that Carly Simon has publicly disclosed she has Parkinson’s disease, explaining her recent absence from public life in a letter to fans published July 27, 2026. The 83-year-old singer-songwriter and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee said she has been adjusting to the diagnosis and learning how to manage symptoms that vary from day to day, including fatigue and mobility problems.

According to the report, Simon said her health issues initially followed arthritis in both knees and one hip, which led to three joint-replacement surgeries. When her walking continued to worsen, she underwent evaluation at the Mayo Clinic and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. She also said she was treated during the same period for basal cell carcinoma on her face, and that the cancer was removed. Simon described both the physical and emotional impact of these health problems, including why she pulled back from being seen publicly.

The disclosure comes as Simon prepares to release Comes in Waves on Aug. 14, her first new album in nearly 20 years after 2009’s Never Been Gone. Rolling Stone reported that the album was recorded at her longtime home on Martha’s Vineyard and produced by collaborator Paul Samwell-Smith. Her children, Ben and Sally Taylor, appear on the project, and Sally made the cover art. The lead single, “Howl,” has already been released.

Simon is best known for songs including “You’re So Vain” and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Her announcement matters both as a personal health update from a major artist and as context for a late-career album created while she was coping with a serious neurological condition.
