What the report says

Carlos Queiroz has left his role as Ghana men’s national team coach after a poor start to the country’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 qualifying campaign, according to Al Jazeera’s report citing the Ghana Football Association. The Portuguese coach had been reappointed on Sept. 2 and departed less than a month later after Ghana suffered back-to-back defeats in Group C.

The latest setback was a 4-2 home loss to Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium, where Ghana led 2-0 before conceding four unanswered goals. That result came after a 2-0 defeat away to Ivory Coast. Ghana therefore sat bottom of the group without a point after two matches, while the top two teams from the four-team group will qualify for the tournament.

The GFA said it and Queiroz mutually agreed to end the contract. In a message published by the association, Queiroz said the conditions needed for success had not been fully established and that recent results contributed to the decision. His exit ends a turbulent spell that began in April and followed his earlier four-month stint leading Ghana at the 2026 World Cup.

As context, Queiroz is a veteran Portuguese coach with experience at several international teams. He had helped Ghana reach the World Cup knockout stage, but the new qualifying losses quickly renewed pressure on the Black Stars and raised fresh concerns about stability in the national team setup.
