Cape Verde coach Bubista resigns to join Moroccan club

Cape Verde head coach Bubista has resigned to take charge of Moroccan club RS Berkane, according to BBC Sport Football. The 56-year-old leaves after a successful spell with the island nation, which included guiding Cape Verde to the last 32 of the World Cup and, more broadly, helping the team reach its first-ever World Cup finals. Cape Verde were knocked out 3-2 by eventual runners-up Argentina after extra time in that tournament.

BBC Sport reported that Bubista had been in post since January 2020 and also led Cape Verde to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. His move takes him to RS Berkane on a two-year contract. The Moroccan side finished second in the top division last season and replace Moin Chaabani, who has since become Tunisia’s head coach.

Berkane are not among Morocco’s most widely followed clubs, but they have built a strong recent record, including a first domestic league title in 2024-25 and three CAF Confederation Cup wins. The club also drew attention in 2024 over a shirt design that included a map of Morocco covering the disputed Western Sahara territory.

Cape Verde’s football federation thanked Bubista for his contribution and wished him well. His departure is part of a wider turnover among coaches of African teams that featured at the World Cup, with several national federations also making changes after the tournament.
