Capcom explains why it's putting out so many Resident Evil remakes and why there aren't a lot of spin-offs - Nintendo Everything

What the report says
Nintendo Everything reported on July 25 that Capcom’s Masachika Kawata has outlined why the company has leaned heavily on Resident Evil remakes while producing fewer spin-offs. His comments, attributed by the site to the latest issue of Game Informer, frame remakes as part of Capcom’s strategy for keeping the long-running survival-horror franchise active between major new installments.
According to the report, Kawata said releasing a brand-new Resident Evil every year would be difficult, so revisiting older titles helps Capcom maintain a steadier release rhythm. He also argued that remake projects are not secondary to main entries, because they let development teams build skills while supporting the broader business of the franchise. Nintendo Everything summarized his view that this cycle helps generate resources for future Resident Evil games as well as other Capcom projects, including new intellectual property such as Pragmata.
On the relative lack of spin-offs, Kawata pointed to resource limits rather than a lack of interest. Nintendo Everything reported that Capcom’s teams are currently focused on new entries such as Resident Evil Requiem and remake work, leaving little capacity for side projects. That explanation matters for fans because Resident Evil has historically included both numbered or mainline releases and experiments outside the core formula, but Capcom appears to be prioritizing the projects it sees as central to the series’ momentum.
The article also notes platform context for Nintendo players: Resident Evil Requiem is available on Nintendo Switch 2, and the system is slated to receive Resident Evil Veronica, described as a remake, in 2027.
