What the report says

Canada and the United States have moved into another round of tariff retaliation after trade talks broke down, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney saying Ottawa will mirror Washington’s new duties “dollar for dollar.” According to Al Jazeera, the escalation follows a 50 percent US levy on about $20bn worth of Canadian goods, affecting more than 500 product categories and adding to existing US tariffs on steel, lumber and cars.

Carney said the US proposed terms that Canada viewed as unfair and inconsistent with its sovereignty, including limits on its ability to strike trade deals elsewhere. Al Jazeera also reported that the latest US measures include products from Canada such as alcohol, dairy, technology, sports gear, wood goods and seasonal items. Canada’s countermeasures, due to begin September 8, are expected to target steel, dairy, appliances, farm equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics.

The article says economists and business groups on both sides of the border warn the tariffs will raise costs for companies and likely push up consumer prices. In Canada, analysts cited by Al Jazeera said some sectors could be hit hard and that unemployment may rise, while the broader economy may feel less than the full value of exports targeted because only a portion of trade is affected. Still, because most Canadian exports go to the US, the dispute carries major significance for both countries’ economies and their long-standing trade relationship.
