The Hill reported that President Trump said Friday it was “fine” that Canada did not include the United States in a ceremony marking completion of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a new crossing between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. The ceremony came after tensions over the bridge and trade policy, including the Trump administration’s threat of a 50 percent tariff on some Canadian imports.

According to The Hill, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Canada had disinvited the U.S. and linked his reaction to tariffs Canada was paying to the United States. He also said the original bridge agreement no longer applied, calling it poorly negotiated by a prior administration, and claimed his administration had changed the terms so the U.S. would receive 50 percent of the profit.

The Hill reported that Canada held the ceremony Friday for the $4.7 billion, 1.5-mile bridge, which is scheduled to open to passenger and commercial traffic on Monday. The project, fully financed by Canada, began construction in 2018 and is named for Gordie Howe, the Canadian hockey legend who played for the Detroit Red Wings.

The report said Trump had threatened in February to block the bridge from opening, citing Canadian limits on U.S. alcohol sales, tariff disputes and Canada’s trade ties with China. The two countries later announced an agreement allowing the long-delayed opening to proceed, though they had differed over future bridge revenue. Officials expect the six-lane span to become an important commercial corridor between the neighboring countries.
