Cameroon claim first Wafcon title with victory over Malawi

Cameroon won their first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title with a 3-0 victory over Malawi in Rabat, capping a strong run in the tournament with a dominant final performance against the debutants. BBC Sport Football reported that Marie Ngah Manga opened the scoring with a close-range header in the 20th minute, before Naomi Eto added a second with a volley on the half hour.

Cameroon extended their lead in first-half stoppage time when Eto rounded Malawi goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo and set up Ngah Manga for her second goal. Malawi, who had impressed during the competition and were led by the attacking threat of the Chawinga sisters, struggled to break through a well-organized Cameroon defence. Their best chances came in the second half, but goalkeeper Michaely Bihina helped preserve the clean sheet.

The result was notable because Cameroon had missed the previous Wafcon finals and only reached this edition after Caf expanded the tournament field. The victory also made them only the fourth nation to win the title, after Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa. BBC Sport Football said the champions will receive $2m in prize money, and both teams are set to feature at the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, alongside other Wafcon semi-finalists Algeria and Morocco.
