Butabika Launches Watoto-Donated Sports Facilities to Support Mental Health Recovery

What the report says
Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi has called on Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital to make greater use of exercise in psychiatric care, saying sport and physical activity can support recovery alongside medical treatment. His remarks came at an event in which Watoto Ministries donated a football pitch and basketball court to the hospital in Kampala, giving the facility new space for recreation and organised activity for patients, staff and the wider hospital community.
According to Nile Post, Baryomunsi welcomed the donation and urged hospital leaders to maintain the facilities and keep them accessible. He said exercise can form part of therapy for people receiving mental health treatment, and suggested the new amenities could help bring patients and health workers together in supervised activities. Watoto Ministries’ lead pastor, Isaac Rotlonyo, also asked the hospital to protect the facilities so they serve their intended purpose.
The article notes that the sports facilities were launched alongside three other institutional initiatives: Butabika’s strategic plan for 2025/2026 to 2029/2030, its service delivery standards, and its clients’ charter. The broader significance is that the hospital is seeking to strengthen both patient rehabilitation and service delivery at Uganda’s main psychiatric referral centre. In general, mental health specialists often include exercise, recreation and social interaction as supportive elements in treatment plans, though the exact use of the new facilities will depend on hospital supervision and patient needs.
