Busoga tourism sites get new lease of life through MTN-Masaza Cup

What the report says
Football crowds attending the MTN-Masaza Cup in Busoga are also visiting local tourism sites, giving greater visibility to attractions near match venues across the kingdom’s 11 chiefdoms, according to The Independent Uganda. The report says the tournament features 14 teams in four pools, with each pool named after a notable Busoga site as part of an effort to link sport with tourism.
The sites highlighted include Nendha Hill in Iganga District, Bukowe Hill in Namutumba, Mawembe Hill in Luuka and Kagulu Hill in Buyende. The article describes Nendha as a cultural and royal site, Bukowe as a place for relaxation, Mawembe as a hill with scenic views and oral history, and Kagulu as a major attraction that already draws climbers and has received public infrastructure support.
Residents and officials quoted in the story said the tournament is helping people discover places they previously knew little about and encouraging stopovers during travel between matches. Evelyn Nandege of Luuka said the exposure could help communities around Mawembe Hill earn income, while Daisy Nabulo of Namayingo said football travel is prompting fans to visit attractions along the way. Busoga Kingdom sports minister Amin Bbosa said the event is intended to create longer-term community impact by promoting tourism assets that have remained underexposed.
The broader significance is that the Masaza Cup is being used not only as a football competition but also as a marketing tool for local tourism and future investment in Busoga.
