Busoga Tourism Minister Urges Peace, Welcomes Govt's Decision on Iganga University

What the report says
Busoga Kingdom Tourism Minister Hellen Namutamba used Uganda’s 64th Independence Day to call for peace, youth discipline and greater protection for vulnerable people. In remarks reported by Nile Post, she urged Ugandans to support children, the elderly and others who may need help, and said young people should focus on education, faith and respect for parents and leaders. She also thanked security agencies for maintaining stability in Busoga and across the country, and encouraged prayers for national leaders and continued unity.
Namutamba also welcomed Cabinet’s approval to re-establish the former Busoga University as a public institution under the new name Iganga University. According to the report, the government has set aside Shs89.998 billion for the project, which is expected to include campuses in Iganga, Kamuli and Bugiri, with Namasagali planned as a constituent college focused on marine and fisheries studies. The university’s formal creation still depends on completion of the legal process by the Ministry of Education and Sports and subsequent parliamentary approval.
She said the institution would widen access to higher education for young people in Busoga and nearby districts, and could help drive regional development. The article says Cabinet chose the name Iganga University after considering other options, including Kiira University and versions tied to Busoga University. The move follows government efforts to take over the former private university after its provisional licence was revoked in 2017 over regulatory shortcomings.
