Busoga postpones 12th coronation anniversary to honour Tooro King Oyo

Busoga Kingdom has postponed the 12th coronation anniversary of Kyabazinga William Gabula Nadiope IV, shifting the main celebration from September 13 to September 19, 2026. According to Nile Post, the event will now be held at Mayuge District Headquarters grounds. The decision was announced by Busoga’s Prime Minister, Owekitibwa Ekisengede Katuukiro Dr Joseph Muwawala, through the Office of the Katuukiro.

The kingdom said the change was made out of respect for the late Tooro monarch, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, and to give Ugandans space to attend his burial, which was due to fall on the same date as the original Busoga ceremony. Nile Post reported that the Busoga statement framed the postponement as a gesture of honour to the fallen Tooro king.

Dr Muwawala also said the Gabula Day commemoration in Buyende, scheduled for September 9, will go ahead as planned. He said that ceremony will also be used to remember the late Tooro king. The story places the announcement in the context of national mourning for a major traditional leader and reflects how cultural institutions sometimes adjust public events during periods of royal succession or burial.

Tooro’s own programme was also changing, with the kingdom saying the body of the deceased monarch would arrive in Uganda later than previously announced.
