Business booms around Karuziika Palace ahead of Oyo burial

Business activity has increased around Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City as mourners travel to attend the burial of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, according to The Independent Uganda. The report says temporary stalls and other businesses have opened along the Fort Portal-Kasese road near the junction to the palace, serving people expected to gather for the ceremonies.

Vendors are selling food, coffee, drinks and royal memorabilia, including Tooro Kingdom flags, photographs, calendars, T-shirts, hats and caps featuring the late king, members of the royal family and former Tooro monarchs. Traders interviewed in the article said sales were beginning to rise, though some still expected more customers as additional mourners arrived in the city.

The increased foot traffic has also benefited hotels and restaurants near the palace, which report stronger demand for meals throughout the day. A hotel operator told URN that food preparation had to be increased to keep up with the number of customers. Some boda boda riders said the expected transport boom had been more modest than hoped, since many visitors are walking or using private vehicles.
