Busia couple found dead in suspected murder-suicide

What the report says

The Observer reports that police in Busia district, eastern Uganda, are investigating the deaths of a married couple found inside their grass-thatched home in Busime sub-county. The deceased were identified as Godfrey Okuku, 31, and his wife, Racheal Auma, 23, residents of Namamera village in Mundindi parish.

According to the report, residents found the bodies on the morning of July 28, 2026. Police said Auma was discovered dead in the couple’s bedroom, while Okuku was found hanging inside the same house. Investigators are treating the matter as a suspected murder-suicide, but said the motive has not been confirmed. Preliminary information pointed to a possible domestic dispute before the deaths.

Bukedi South regional police spokesperson Moses Johnson Mugwe told The Observer that the case was first reported by the local LCI chairperson to Busime Police Post, after which detectives from the Police Investigations Unit went to the scene. Police recovered items including an axe, a blood-stained knife, surgical blades, a broken television, a solar panel, a radio and other household effects believed to be relevant to the inquiry. The bodies were taken to Masafu General Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.

The Observer cited residents who described the incident as unexpected. One resident said the couple had not shown obvious signs of serious domestic conflict, while another said villagers had expected them to take part in LCI elections before learning of the deaths. The case remains under police investigation.
