Burugo Primary School crowned national champion at inaugural dettol hygiene quest festival

Burugo Primary School in Jinja District has won the inaugural National Dettol Hygiene Quest Festival, The Independent Uganda reported. The event, held in Jinja last weekend, brought together schools from across Uganda to use Music, Dance and Drama as tools for teaching pupils about sanitation, handwashing and disease prevention.

According to the report, 159 schools took part in the nationwide programme, with 25 reaching the grand finale. Burugo Primary School was named overall champion after performances judged around hygiene-related themes and received a small token of appreciation for its efforts. Officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports, district local government leaders and representatives of non-governmental organisations attended the finale.

Shamim Nabuuma Kaliisa, Founder and CEO of Chil AI Lab and focal person for Dettol Hygiene Quest Uganda, said the festival showed that children can absorb health messages more deeply when lessons are delivered through the arts. She also indicated that organisers intend to return with a larger edition next year.

The Independent reported that the Dettol Hygiene Quest is supported by Reckitt, the company behind Dettol and other consumer brands, with technology partners including Chil AI Lab. The programme combines school-based hygiene education, digital learning tools such as an AI chatbot, and cultural activities. Organisers say the initiative is aimed at strengthening lifelong hygiene habits among learners, reducing hygiene-related absenteeism and supporting healthier school communities.
