What the report says

France awoke to extensive damage after protests on Saturday escalated into riots and looting in several cities, according to BBC World News. Police arrested about 1,800 people nationwide as roughly 550,000 demonstrators joined largely peaceful marches over fuel prices, the cost of living and declining public services, including schools. The BBC reported that unrest later spread in Paris, Marseille, Lille and other areas, with burned vehicles, smashed shopfronts, fires and vandalism left behind.

In Paris, riot police used tear gas and water cannon as some crowds clashed with officers, while looting hit shops and restaurants in the capital and elsewhere. The BBC also described damage to luxury stores and a ransacked clothing shop near Place de la République. In Marseille, protesters forced their way into city hall, and in Lille police said a McDonald’s was set on fire and an Apple store was broken into. Officials in several cities reported fires or serious building damage, including in Lyon, Limoges and Saint-Étienne.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said 150 police officers were injured, the BBC reported. The unrest comes amid a broader student protest movement that has gathered momentum in recent weeks, with demonstrators pressing for more investment in schools and criticizing overcrowding, staff shortages and poor conditions. The scale of the disorder has raised concerns about how quickly separate protest actions can be overtaken by violence and opportunistic crime.
