Burkina Faso has opened its first gold refinery, the RAFFINOR-BF facility, in Ouagadougou, according to a report by Premium Times distributed through AllAfrica. The refinery was inaugurated on Monday by military leader Ibrahim Traoré and is being presented by the government as part of a broader effort to process mineral wealth at home rather than exporting raw material.

In remarks cited by the government’s Information Service, Traoré described the project as a step toward economic independence and said the country wants to keep more of the value chain inside Burkina Faso. The administration has also been seeking a larger role in the mining sector, including higher state ownership in projects and the creation of a national gold reserve.

The report says the refinery cost more than $19 million and can process 164 tonnes of gold a year. Burkina Faso’s mines minister, Yacouba Gouba, said the plant was financed through the state-backed National Precious Substances Company, together with private partners, and was built to international standards. Officials said it will turn dore gold into 99.9% pure bars and could eventually handle gold from elsewhere in the region.

The launch matters because Burkina Faso is one of Africa’s leading gold producers, yet it has faced long-running problems with informal mining, weak enforcement, insecurity and illicit trafficking. The new refinery reflects a government push to capture more value from the sector and reduce dependence on exports of unprocessed minerals.
